All Time Low & Their Future Hearts
Interviewer: And now on the show, we have American, pop-punk band, All Time Low. Hey guys, welcome.
All Time Low: Hey/hello/hi/what's up? (in sync)
Interviewer: So, let's start with your new album Future Hearts. It's just been released worldwide, how do you feel about that?
Alex: Oh man, it's so exciting. I feel like this album really captures who we are as a band, and the direction we want to go in, and our intentions.
Jack: Yeah, like, it sounds kinda different to our older records. It's also more meaningful and emotional.
Interviewer: Where did your inspiration for this record come from? When you say it's different, do you mean you experimented with your sound more?
Rian: We definitely did experiment a lot, yeah. We spent roughly two years in the studio, you know, writing, recording, producing, collaborating, making sure we get the right message across in all our lyrics. I think that since we've worked with so many different people on this album compared to our last ones, it does sound different, it fits the style of many music tastes. You know, like, we've got pop/punk stuff on there. There's upbeat songs, there's slow songs, of which the punk level varies depending on the context of the song.
Alex: Yeah that's true. I mean like, if you compare Missing You and Kicking And Screaming you'll see what Rian means by that. Missing You is more slow and meaningful whereas Kicking And Screaming is more on the pop/punk side. It's a big difference, but all the songs have a different meaning and the melody of each one really reflects that.
Interviewer: Do you think this means you can connect more with you fans by doing that. Zach, what do you think?
Zach: Honestly, I think this album mostly connects with teens and young adults, mostly because that's not only where most of our fanbase is but they're who can relate to the lyrics the most.
Alex: I think this album really reflects the tough times, and discovering who you are. We really like to promote getting though these types of things, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness. You know, like, we have fans who tell us that our music has saved them, is getting them though the tough times or made then feel better. And we love that our music can do that, that became our main focus over the past ten years.
Jack: Let's see. We have Kids In The Dark, Runaways, Missing You. They're all about moving on and doing what you want. Especially Missing You. It's probably the most emotional song on the album.
Rian and Alyx: "Hold on tight, this ride is a wild one. Make no mistake, the day will come when you can't cover up what you've done. Now don't lose your fight, kid. It only takes a little push to pull on through. With so much left to do, you'll be missing out, and we'll be missing you."
Jack: Yeah, see, look at that, nicely done, guys.
Zach: The message we really hoped to get across on this album is that life gets better, keep moving forwards, have no regrets, do what makes you happy. But we also don't disregard that bad times do happen.
Alex: We really want our music to speak to our fans. They got us to where we are, and the least we can do is help them the best we can.
Zach: So, I guess back to the original question. Our inspiration for this album was the fans.
Interviewer: How about the name of your album, where did you come up with that?
Alex: We actually have a song on the album called Old Scars / Future Hearts. It goes like, "We've got scars on our future hearts but we never look back." Considering the album is aimed towards the future generations of, we thought like, hey, let's name the album Future Hearts because, collectively, that's what the record is all about.
Rian: Teens have been impacted by the world, but they're still moving forward despite their struggles. So, we wanted to capture all those feeling in our music.
Jack: Yeah, and we really want to help them get past that. We were teenagers once, we know how life works.
Interviewer: More from All Time Low after the break.
