How does Mahfouz illustrate how fate is a major determiner of one’s happiness in life?

Mahfouz illustrates events of fate as benchmarks in a character's life. This is portrayed in 'The Thief and The Dogs' to either have a positive or negative outcome, whether it is immediately or a gradual cline. Fate refers to occurrences in life, that are out of a character's control. It refers to something that is meant to happen, and can't be changed. For example, Said's upbringing plays a huge role in the way his life plays out. His father died, and his mother was sick, then denied treatment at the hospital. Neither of these events can Said control. Said has to learn to steal things to survive. It seems this is fate, as he heads into the direction of a career in thieving. This fate lead Said to enjoy his career, working alongside his wife, showing the audience that he was happy in these days. However, this quickly turns around due to the actions of others. For example, when Said planned his revenge on Ilish, Ilish moved away and hence Said murders a stranger without knowing. It could be described as fate that Said killed a stranger, considering that he was unaware that Ilish moved, and he did not see his victim. This left Said angry that Ilish was still alive, and ultimately kept him on the path of violence and revenge, which ultimately lead to his death through his obsession for revenge and tragic flaw of being unable to adapt to change. The second time Said goes for a murder, he kills the wrong person again. This is depicted as fate, and in turn made him more of a wanted man. The action of Nur disappearing could be considered fate, as Said would have to leave her house and survive on his lonesome. This is when he is caught by police. It could be considered karma, as Said was actually using Nur as an ally and her house as shelter. It was luck through fate that Said came into contact with Nur, which seemed perfect timing as he was looking for a vehicle, of which she could help him achieve. This single event caused happiness in Said as he felt success and confidence in his plan for revenge, however the build up of the his fate decreased his happiness over time due to the outcome of negative events. Fate lead him to continuous failures, and eventually, his death, which seems like his destiny in the end.
